There are two photographs in the collection of C. D. Arnold's photographs, The Pan-American Exposition Illustrated, (Buffalo, N. Y.: C. D. Arnold, 1901) of a figure who bears a striking resemblance to John Philip Sousa. However, the captions in the book do not identify the person. Is it possible that C. D. Arnold captured John Philip Sousa in two images on the Exposition grounds away from his band? The beard, the glasses, and the jacket all seem to match, but the insignia on the cap may not. A third image of Sousa has been included as well as cropped versions of the Arnold photos for comparison.
