All members of the public are welcome at any of the University Libraries during their hours of operation. See Services for Libraries’ Visitors and Guests for further information.

  Borrowing Privileges

Alumni Borrowing Privileges
The UB Alumni Association has negotiated borrowing privileges for its members. Bring your UB Alumni membership ID to any library circulation desk to receive your Courtesy Borrower / Library Research Station Access Card, which will allow you to borrow up to 25 items. Check your due dates carefully; they vary depending on library unit and type of material.

Visitor Borrowing Privileges
Visitors who are currently affiliated with other SUNY institutions have borrowing privileges under the SUNY Open Access program. All other visitors can check Services for Libraries’ Visitors and Guests for eligibility.

  Using Library Research Stations
  • Which stations can I use?
You may log on to any research station within the Libraries that has a BLUE sign at the top of the monitor, labeled LIBRARY Research Station . Please note that logon at a CYBRARY station is not permitted. Library research station locations are as follows:

  • North Campus
Lockwood Library - Second floor, by the reference desk, basement, third, fourth and fifth floors by the elevators.
Capen Libraries - First, second, and fourth floors
Law Library (O'Brian Hall) - Second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh floors
    Music Library (Baird Hall)

  • South Campus
Health Sciences Library (Abbott Hall) - first floor
Architecture & Planning Library (Hayes Hall)

  • What software will I be able to use on the station?
The stations will provide Internet access and web-based e-mail, access to the BISON Library Catalog, access to Research Databases, and Endnote. The stations do not have word processing, spreadsheet, or database software. These types of programs may be available for your use at your local public library.

  • How do I log on/off?

    • Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to log on

    • Enter your Library User Name and password exactly as printed on your Library Research Station Access Card

    • For security and privacy reasons, it is important that you log out at the end of your session. Click START and click LOG OFF to end your session.

  • Should I change my password?
You should change your password by visiting the following URL after you get your new Library User Name: https://ubidm.buffalo.edu/

Please remember your password since we cannot perform password resets. If your password is forgotten, you will need to open a new guest account.

Please see Library Circulation Desk staff for assistance.

  Databases & E-Journal Access

Your Courtesy Borrower / Library Research Station Access Card only works in our Libraries. Due to licensing restrictions, we are UNABLE to provide off campus access to UB databases, electronic journals, and other subscription-based electronic resources.

UB Alumni Association members can access JSTOR and EBSCO Academic Search Alumni Edition and Business Source Alumni Edition as part of their Members-only Benefits. Please contact the Alumni office for their special login information as the login procedure is not the same as the University at Buffalo Libraries. Technical questions should be directed to the UB Alumni Association.

If you are not currently affiliated with the University at Buffalo, you are unable to access our databases from outside the library. If you are a New York State resident, you can access databases freely through the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, the new York State Library's NOVELNY, and the New York Public Library.

  Visiting the Libraries

High School Student Visitors - The UB Arts & Sciences Libraries invite area high school teachers and librarians to investigate possibilities for student instruction and research in any of the UB Arts & Sciences Libraries to enhance students' skills and understanding of library research.
