1. What is the Library Skills Workbook?

The Library Skills Workbook is designed to help UB undergraduate students develop their library research skills. The Workbook consists of 5 sections: The Research Process, Finding Articles, Finding Books, Searching the Internet, and the UB Libraries Web Site. Each section has 5 questions that require you to read material, use specific UB library resources, and think critically.

2. What are "discipline-specific versions " of the Library Skills Workbook?

The discipline-specific versions of the Library Skills Workbook are optional, alternate versions. Any UB student can take them. Students should choose only one version and complete it; any of them will fulfill the Workbook requirement. The 6 current discipline-specific versions are: Architecture, Business & Management, Engineering, Health Sciences, History and Music.

3. Who has to do the Workbook?

This is a General Education Program requirement for all UB undergraduate students, including transfer students. It is a university requirement that you complete the Workbook in the first year of study at UB.

4. Will I receive academic credit for completing the Workbook?

No. The Workbook is a requirement for all undergraduates at UB, but no academic credit is assigned to its completion.

5. Do I need to complete the Workbook by a specific date?

Yes. Beginning in the fall of 2011, all undergraduate students must complete the Workbook during their first year of study at UB. If the Workbook is assigned as a requirement for one of your courses, your deadline will be at the discretion of your instructor.

6. Can the Workbook be completed at any time, night or day?

Yes, the Workbook is online via UBlearns 24-hours a day.

7. Can the Workbook be accessed off campus?

Yes, it is available on any computer connected to the Internet. If you are off-campus and UB is not your service provider, you may be required to provide your UBIT user name and password to access some of the linked material.

8. How long will it take me to complete the Workbook?

On average, it will take you between 30 and 60 minutes to complete the entire Workbook.

9. Can I print out a copy of the questions?

You may print out a copy of questions from individual sections, but it is not possible to print out a copy of the entire Workbook at one time.

10. What do I need to do to pass the Workbook?

You must receive a score of 4 or 5 out of 5 possible points on each section in order to pass. If you score 3 or below on any section, you will fail. Please note that you must successfully complete all 5 sections of the Workbook in order to pass.

11. How can I confirm that I've passed each section?

To confirm whether you have passed or failed a section, select the My Scores link from the left menu. Your score will appear next to each section that you have completed.

12. Can the 5 sections in the Workbook be done at different times?

Yes, each of the 5 sections can be completed independently of each other. Each section has its own score and the results for each section are saved.

13. Can I save my answers in a section if I don't have time to complete the entire section in one sitting?

Yes. You can save your answer to each question by clicking on the Save button to the right of the question. You may also select the larger Save button at the bottom right side of the screen.

14. Can I change an answer to a question after I've already selected an answer?

You can only change your answer if you do so before clicking on Submit.

15. What if there is a problem with a link within a question?

Please notify us if there is a problem with a link by sending an email message to ub-library-skills@buffalo.edu. In your email message, be sure to tell us which version of the Workbook you found the problem in.

16. What if there is a computer malfunction while I am completing the Workbook?

Unfortunately, the answers will be lost for the section that is being completed. Please contact us at ub-library-skills@buffalo.edu if you encounter any difficulties in retaking the affected section. Any section you have already submitted, or any questions that you have already saved, will not be affected.

17. What happens if I do not pass a section?

You may retake any failed section two additional times by clicking on the title again. See the "How to Begin..." section of the Workbook for full instructions.

18. Will I be notified if I did not pass the Workbook?

No, you must contact us if you fail by sending an email to ub-library-skills@buffalo.edu. Do not send this message until you have completed all five sections and the two retake attempts for any failed section(s). See the "If You Fail..." section of the Workbook for full instructions.

19. Will I be notified if I pass?

No, you will not receive notification. You can verify your scores by clicking on the My Scores link from the left menu. Your score will appear for each completed section. Additionally, your advising report will be updated within the week that you pass, which will be your permanent record of having passed the Workbook.

20. When will my advising report show that I completed the Workbook?

Your advising report will be updated within 48 business hours of when you passed the Workbook.

21. I completed and passed the Workbook. Why does it still appear on my UBlearns Courses menu?

The Workbook will stay on your UBlearns Courses menu until the conclusion of the semester in which you enrolled. It will not disappear automatically upon completion.

22. How can I prove to my instructor that I passed the Workbook?

We do not send individual confirmation messages to students. You may print your HUB Academic Advising Report to demonstrate to your instructor that you have passed the Workbook. On your Academic Advising Report, in the General Education section, you will see Library Skills Workbook with an indication of “Satisfied” or “Not Satisfied.” Your Academic Advising Report will reflect that you have satisfied the requirement within 48 business hours of completion. For a tutorial on using your HUB Academic Advising Report, please follow this link.

You may send an email to ub-library-skills@buffalo.edu. Please indicate your full name if you have started or completed the Workbook, and your question relates to that attempt, indicate when this occurred. Please also indicate which version of the Workbook you are enrolled in.
