Circulation Services for UB Students

Circulation policies are designed to provide equal access to the library collections for all University at Buffalo students, faculty and staff.

Library Borrowing Privileges

Library borrowing privileges are available to currently enrolled University at Buffalo students. To receive in-person borrowing services from any University library, current students must have a UB Card. Your UB Card also provides access to a wealth of electronic resources throughout the University library system, on campus or remotely from your office, dorm, or home.

Library Cards

Your official UB Card serves as your library card. The card is non-transferable and you are responsible for all materials charged against it. Stolen or lost cards should be reported as soon as possible to the UB Card Office.

Change of Address

In order for the Libraries to contact you, report changes of address to the Student Response Center or on MyUB.

Loan Periods

Loan periods vary among libraries and is determined by library ownership (location), material type and the borrower status, i.e., UB student, faculty, staff, alumni or guest.

Generally, undergraduate students may borrow items for 28 days (4 weeks) and doctoral students, faculty and staff may borrow items for 112 days (16 weeks). For a listing of loan periods by Library, refer to the General Loan Period chart. Some periodicals may circulate briefly; ask for details at the circulation desk.

Due Dates

Due dates are subject to change if the book is recalled at the request of another reader. All books must be returned or renewed before the due date to avoid fines.

Renewing Materials

Non-reserve materials may be renewed an unlimited number of times unless requested by another reader by means of a hold or recall. Renewals can be made using MyLibraryCard. Course reserve material may not be renewed.

The borrower is responsible for being aware of the University Libraries' policy regarding renewing library material.

Returning Materials

Library material must be returned or renewed on or before the due date to avoid fines. Most library materials may be returned to any University Libraries' Circulation Desk or the book drops located by the main entrances of some Libraries or via the self-check stations located in the Silverman or Lockwood Libraries.

The following items must be returned to the UB Libraries Circulation Desk from which they were borrowed:

  • Audio-visual materials
  • Periodicals
  • Course reserve materials
  • Interlibrary loan materials
  • Other "controlled" items

Return Claims

A receipt is required to prove that library items have been returned. To ensure "proof of return," you must request a receipt when you return the materials. You can also print out a receipt from one of the self-check stations.

Fines

Fines and charges are assessed to encourage the prompt return of materials. UB students and guest borrowers are fined for items returned late. Fines accrue while the Libraries are closed.

The borrower is responsible for being aware of the University Libraries' policy regarding fines and charges.

As a courtesy, overdue notices for non-reserve materials are sent seven calendar days after the due date but the borrower is responsible for accumulated fines regardless of whether or not the notice is received.

Payment of Fines

Fines and charges may be paid with cash, credit card and check or money order made payable to the "University at Buffalo". Delinquent accounts may result in suspension of borrowing privileges.

Recalls

If the library item you need is checked out to another user, you may request  it by using Delivery+.

If an item cannot be located in the stacks, use Delivery+ to request that it be found for you.

 

Other Libraries

If you cannot find what you need at one of the UB Libraries, use Delivery+ to request it.
