Test Preparation Handbooks

Civil Service Employment and Professional Certification Examinations

The University Libraries do not collect test preparation books because of insufficient resources to purchase and maintain an up-to-date selection of this time-sensitive material.

New York State Department of Civil Service lists guides for current local exams.

Public libraries sometimes have examination books available for borrowing. To search the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library Catalog, use the name of the test, or use the name of the job and the word "examinations"; for example, notary examinations or police examinations.

Study guides for Civil Services examinations are available electronically through the Buffalo and Erie County Public Libraries in a database called LearningExpress.

You can also purchase such materials at local bookstores.

College and Professional School Entrance Tests
The University Libraries purchase a limited number of school entrance test preparation handbooks. To see what is available, do a keyword search in the UB Libraries Catalog; use the acronym for the examination you are seeking, for example, GMAT.

Test preparation materials are often free or made available for a modest charge when you register to take an entrance examination; for more information do a Google search under the name of the test to locate the "official site." Some examination names include:

  • GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test)
  • GRE (Graduate Record Examination)
  • LSAT (Law School Admission Test)
  • MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

Test preparation materials can be purchased at local bookstores. .
