Vision, Mission, & Values

VISION

The University at Buffalo Libraries will become, and be recognized as, a premier public research university library system.

MISSION

The University Libraries facilitate access to, and the effective use of, information in all formats to advance the research, teaching, and service missions of the University at Buffalo and the State University of New York by -

  • providing access to comprehensive, worldwide information resources and discovery tools,
  • developing and managing local information resource collections,
  • teaching students how to evaluate information and conduct effective research,
  • collaborating with faculty and investigators on effective research and instruction strategies,
  • supporting access to, and preservation of, unique contemporary and historical materials in all formats, and
  • providing safe, welcoming, and comfortable physical spaces for research, teaching, learning, and study.

VALUES

In carrying out this mission the University Libraries will work to -

  • deliver courteous, accessible, responsive, and timely information services for all University and public patrons,
  • encourage innovation and leverage cutting-edge information technologies,
  • develop strategic resource-sharing partnerships with other libraries and organizations,
  • recognize and appreciate the diversity of skills and perspectives among our staff and patrons,
  • maintain ongoing, open communications with users and among staff,
  • recognize and acknowledge staff excellence and expertise,
  • grant staff the freedom to exercise judgment,
  • foster a strong work ethic as well as a culture of teamwork and accountability, and
  • provide continuous learning and staff development opportunities.
