ESRI Virtual Campus Courses   

GIS Training is available at no cost to all UB Faculty, Staff and Students as a benefit through our campus-wide site license with ESRI , the Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.

ESRI Virtual Campus Courses are online, self-paced, step by step lessons that cover a variety of topics related to GIS applications and technology. Currently there are 40+ course selections to choose from that are included with our standard subscription, and many more seminars are available that are free to the public.

They include interactive software exercises and accompanying data, streamed lectures, live training seminars, printable presentation slides, and optional exams with personalized completion certificates.

GIS Software

Access to ESRI GIS software is available to UB affiliates in the following ways:

  • All UB Affilates (including Undergraduate students) are eligible to receive a free student edition copy of ArcGIS 9 - One Year Education Use Only for their personal computers. Stop by the library at 224 or 225 Capen Hall to pick up a free copy.
  • A public GIS workstation is located in the Undergraduate Library of Capen Hall, visit the reference desk librarian for logon access. This workstation is installed with ArcMap 9.2 and ArcView 3.3.

  • Depending on your UB Academic Program, students may have user privileges to departmental GIS laboratories such as in Geography, Geology, Anthropology, Urban Planning and others. Check with your department to determine GIS software availability and user access restrictions in departmental labs.
  • Faculty and Staff are eligible for permanent installations of ESRI software on their UB owned office computers. They must request an ESRI software account from UB's site license administrator by submitting a CASet's GIS-ESRI Support form. The software account request form with instructions is available from the Campus User's Guide for Accessing ESRI Software .

Course Offerings

Our STANDARD SUBSCRIPTION includes over 40+ Virtual Campus Courses that UB affiliates are eligible to enroll in free of charge after obtaining a Course Access Code through our registration form. Users may complete the lessons at their own pace and courses are valid for one year. As a general rule, please allow 2-4 hours to complete workshops and approximately 18-24 hours to complete courses.

The COMPLETE COURSE CATALOG contains courses authored by third-parties outside of ESRI and are not included in our standard subscription, but, are available for purchase separately. UB affilates are elgible for an educational user discount on most courses that are not offered through our standard subscription.

ESRI also offers FREE TRAINING SEMINARS that are open to the public, as well as, some free modules for courses that do not require pre-registration with a Course Access Code.

UB Sign Up

To enroll you will need to request an ESRI course code by filling out our UB campus registration form. Please note: all users must have a current UB email account in order to request a free Virtual Campus Course.

SIGN UP - UB Campus Registration Form

Requests will automatically be submitted to the College of Arts and Sciences Educational Technology (CASet) unit. Following this submission you will receive confirmation by email of your Course Access Code and further instructions for ESRI course enrollment will be provided. Please allow 2-3 working days for these requests to be processed.

ESRI Registration Set-up

Once you receive your Course Access Code you will then need to register with the ESRI Training and Education website available at: http://training.esri.com/gateway/index.cfm. An email with further instructions will be sent to you when you are issued your registration code.

This will require a one time registration to establish your ESRI Global Login Account. On subsequent visits you will use the same user name and password to re-enter 'My Training', for access to your virtual GIS training and course transcript records.

Courses are available for up to one year from the date of registration for your completion and repeated access. After one year they will be expire, however they will still remain listed on your course transcript permanently. You may also re-register and repeat any courses as needed.

Course certificates (.pdf format) are instantly made available to users upon completion of each course module and after completing the final course exam. Tip: In addition to your course transcripts, make sure to save electronic copies of your certificates, as some academic programs require ESRI modules to be completed as either prerequisites and/or required coursework.
