"The Works of Walter Mosley: Making It Look Easy"
Lockwood Memorial Library, main lobby, February 21 - April 30, 2013
In conjunction with Walter Mosley’s appearance as keynote speaker at UB’s 37th Martin Luther King, Jr. commemoration event on February 28, 2013, the University Libraries present The Works of Walter Mosley: Making It Look Easy, an exhibit highlighting the literary output of this powerful and provocative writer.
Mosley’s fiction, ranging from popular detective novels to science fiction and non-genre fiction, is highlighted in the exhibit by a series of colorful covers, accompanied by excerpts from critical reviews and commentaries on his work.
Mosley’s nonfiction, focusing on such issues as race, class and economic inequality, is also featured, along with several samples of his art work.
Located in the main lobby of Lockwood Memorial Library, the exhibit may be viewed during regular library hours from February 21 through April 30, 2013.

"Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine"
Health Sciences Library, 1st floor lobby, February 11 - March 23, 2013
“There was a lot more to magic, as Harry quickly found out, than waving your wand and saying a few funny words.” Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, J. K. Rowling
In 1997, British author J.K. Rowling introduced the world to Harry Potter and a literary phenomenon was born. Although the work is fantasy, the magic in these books is partially based on Renaissance traditions which played an important role in the devleopment of Western science and medicine, including alchemy, astrology, and natural philosophy. Incorporating the work of several 15th- and 16th-century thinkers, the seven-part series examines important ethical topics such as the desire for knowledge, the effects of prejudice, and the responsibility that comes with power.
This exhibition, using materials from the National Library of Medicine, explores Harry Potter’s world, its roots in Renaissance science, and the ethical questions that affected not only the wizards of Harry Potter, but also the historical thinkers featured in the series.
This exhibition is brought to you by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health.
