Common Questions


Do I need to complete the Workbook by a specific date?
Yes. You must complete the Workbook prior to graduation. Additionally, at the end of each academic semester  the Workbook is redesigned, and at that time incomplete attempts are cleared. Attempts were most recently cleared at 9 am on Tuesday July 21, 2009. Please enroll and begin again if a prior incomplete attempt was cleared. If the Workbook is assigned as a requirement for one of your courses, your deadline will be at the discretion of your instructor.

Can the Workbook be completed at any time, night or day?
Yes, the Workbook is online via UBlearns 24-hours a day.

Can the Workbook be accessed off campus?
Yes, it is available on any computer connected to the Internet. If you are off-campus and UB is not your service provider, you may be required to provide your UBIT user name and password to access some of the linked material.

How long will it take me to complete the Workbook?
On average, it will take you between 30 and 60 minutes to complete the entire Workbook.

Can I print out a copy of the questions?
You may print out a copy of questions from individual sections, but it is not possible to print out a copy of the entire Workbook at one time.

What do I need to do to pass the Workbook?
You must receive a score of 4 or 5 out of 5 possible points on each section in order to pass. If you score 3 or below on any section, you will fail. Please note that you must successfully complete all 5 sections of the Workbook in order to pass.

How can I confirm that I've passed each section?
To confirm whether you have passed or failed a section, select the "My Scores" link from the left menu. An indication of Pass or Fail will appear for each section that you have completed.

Can the 5 sections in the Workbook be done at different times?
Yes, each of the 5 sections can be completed independently of each other. Each section has its own score and the results for each section are saved.

Can I save my answers in a section if I don't have time to complete the entire section in one sitting?
Yes. You can save your answer to each question by clicking on the "Save" button to the right of the question. You may also select the larger "Save" button at the bottom right side of the screen.

Can I change an answer to a question after I’ve already selected an answer?
You can only change your answer if you do so before clicking on “Submit.”

What if there is a problem with a link within a question? 
Please notify us if there is a problem with a link by sending an email message to ub-library-skills@buffalo.edu.

What if there is a computer malfunction while I am completing the Workbook?
Unfortunately, the answers will be lost for the section that is being completed. Please contact us at ub-library-skills@buffalo.edu if you encounter any difficulties in retaking the affected section. Any section you have already submitted, or any questions that you have already saved, will not be affected.

What happens if I do not pass a section?
Please select the "How to Retake..." link from the left menu for directions.

Will I be notified if I did not pass the Workbook?
Yes, you will receive notification through your UB email account with instructions on what to do if you did not pass. However, you will not receive any notice until you have completed all 5 sections and the Retake of any failed section(s).

Will I be notified if I pass?
No, you will not receive notification. You can verify your scores by clicking on the "My Scores" link from the left menu. An indication of Pass or Fail will appear for each completed section.

When will my DARS Report show that I completed the Workbook?
Since it is not an automated process, it can take up to 2 weeks for your DARS Report to reflect that you have passed. You can verify that your DARS Report has been updated when there is an "OK" next to "Library Skills."

How can I prove to my instructor that I passed the Workbook?
Your instructor may send an email query to ub-library-skills@buffalo.edu and request confirmation of a passing score.

What if I have another question that is not on this list?
You may send an email to ub-library-skills@buffalo.edu, or contact Tiffany Walsh at 645-1322. If you call and leave a voicemail, please leave your full name; if you have started or completed the Workbook, and your question relates to that attempt, indicate when this occurred.
