Library Overdue Fine Policy

Fines are assessed to encourage the prompt return of library materials. UB students and guest borrowers will be fined for items returned late. All days and hours are counted for the purpose of determining library overdue fines whether the library is open or closed.  Failure to return library materials by the due date:

  • An outstanding balance of $100.00 or more suspends borrowing privileges.
  • Overdue fines are imposed immediately on student and guest borrowers for the late return of any items.
  • There are different overdue fine rates for different categories of materials.
  • Guest borrowers with unpaid overdue fines are unable to borrow or renew library materials.

Library Overdue and Fine Notices

  • As a courtesy, patrons will be reminded of the due date for circulating materials via email (or, in the absence of an email account, US mail) three days before an item is due.
  • Additional reminders will be sent one and eight days after the due date.
  • At 20 days past the due date, you will be billed a fee for a lost item and charged appropriately.
  • Library notices are sent to UB students, faculty and staff via UBIT e-mail accounts. If an alternate e-mail account is being used, please have your UBIT account forward e-mail to the e-mail account you are using. Instructions for forwarding e-mail can be found at on the UBIT Email Forwarding website.
  • The My Library Card feature in the library catalog can also be used to view all library fines.

Please note that the borrower is responsible for accumulated overdue fines whether or not the overdue notice is received.
