Study Spaces in the UB Libraries

Q. What study space is available in the libraries?

A. In addition to general study tables and carrels, some of the libraries have group study rooms, quiet study areas and lockable carrels.

Group Study Rooms:

  • Arts & Sciences Libraries
    • Lockwood Memorial Library has space in rooms 420, 519, and 520 on a first-come, first-served basis.
    • The Capen Libraries (Science & Engineering Library and the Undergraduate Library) have rooms on the first and third floors on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Health Sciences Library requires a minimum of two students, faculty or staff for the use of group rooms. Each patron must present a UB Card at the Circulation Desk to sign up for a room. Individual study rooms are on the second mezzanine, no keys needed, first-come, first-served.

  • Law Library limits use of conference rooms for group study to Law students and limits the time to two hours. Present a UB Card at the Circulation Desk to check out a key. Reservations are taken only on the day the room is needed. No telephone reservations are taken. See Law Library Policy.

  • Music Library occasionally has a seminar room for group use. Ask about availability at the Circulation Desk.

Quiet Study Areas:

  • Arts & Sciences Libraries
    • Lockwood Memorial Library has areas on floors 4 and 5.
    • The Capen Libraries (Science & Engineering Library and the Undergraduate Library) have areas on the north sides of first and third floors.

  • Health Sciences Library has areas on the second floor and in the Digital Resources Center (in the basement) and on the second mezzanine.

  • Law Library has areas on floors 4-7.

  • Music Library has areas in the stacks area.

Individual Lockable Carrels:

  • Arts & Sciences Libraries
    • Lockwood Memorial Library gives priority to doctoral candidates; carrels are assigned for a semester. Application forms are available near the Circulation Desk or use the Lockwood Library Study Carrel Application when carrels are available.
    • Science & Engineering Library gives priority to doctoral candidates; carrels are assigned for a semester. Application forms are available in room 228 on the second floor of the Science & Engineering Library.

  • Law Library limits use of carrels to Law students. Present a UB Card at the Circulation Desk to check out a key. Reservations are taken only on the day the room is needed. No reservations are taken. See Law Library Policy.
