Welcome to the Map Collection

The Map Collection at the University at Buffalo is the largest in Western New York. It contains over 350,000 maps, 6,000 aerial photos, and more than 500 atlases covering all regions of the world, with emphasis on Buffalo and Erie County, New York State, the United States, Canada, and the University at Buffalo campuses.

Location: The University at Buffalo Map Collection is moving to the Ground Floor of Lockwood Library. The collection will be moved to Lockwood in December – please use Delivery+  to request materials. The Map Librarian will continue to offer the same level of service uninterrupted throughout the move - please contact David Bertuca

The collection will be open for business in Lockwood Library on January 26, 2015

Hours: Open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Closed Saturday, Sunday, and holidays (see building hours).

Map Librarian: The Map Librarian David J. Bertuca can be contacted directly at 716-645-1332 or send email.

Office hours for map reference are: Tuesdays 10 a.m.-12 noon and Thursdays 1p.m.-3 p.m. You may also contact the Reference Desk at 716-645-2945 or send e-mail.

Borrowing: Maps in the Map Collection (except for those in Map Reference & Atlas Collections) may be borrowed by UB students, faculty, staff, and by those with other borrowing privileges.

Scanning & Copying: Color scans of maps can be made in the library using the free, public scanner located near the circulation desk on the 1st floor; please note that this scanner can make 8.5 x 14 inch scans. Black-and-white photocopies (8.5 x 11 inch) can be made using library copiers; to make color photocopies, items must be checked out and taken to a copy shop, such as Great Lakes Graphics & Printing in the UB Commons, Suite 105, 716-636-8440.

Instruction: Class instruction and research workshops can be provided upon request. Contact the Map Librarian David Bertuca at 716-645-1332 or to schedule an instructional session.

Arrangement: Most of the maps in the collection have been cataloged and are included in the UB Libraries Catalog. The Map Collection is arranged using several methods. Maps are arranged by: (1) title (alphabetical); (2) by Library of Congress call number; or (3) by U.S. Government SuDocs number for government-issued maps. Using the catalog will assist you in determining which system to use for a particular map/atlas.

The floor plan below shows the arrangement of maps by type and call number.
