Photographs from the J. Warren Perry Collection
Curated by John Bewley

Introduction

The J. Warren Perry Collection is a result of Dr. Perry's lifetime involvement with music, especially opera. The large collection of photographs (more than 1900) provides a striking visual record of many of the most significant musicians of the twentieth century. While the collection is principally centered on opera singers, it also contains images of opera productions, conductors, instrumentalists, composers, ensembles, and music halls. Many of the photographs bear inscriptions to Dr. Perry from the musicians. This exhibit is a sampling of the images in the collection.

Dr. Perry, dean emeritus of the School of Health Related Professions at the University at Buffalo, has devoted much of his life to supporting the arts. Before moving to Buffalo he was one of the founders of the Lyric Opera Company in Chicago. Since arriving in Buffalo Dr. Perry has served as chairman or board member for several local organizations, including the Buffalo Philharmonic, Community Music School, Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site, Artpark, and Friends of the Center for the Arts. The numerous awards granted to honor Dr. Perry's contributions to the community include the Buffalo Arts Councils' Supporter of the Arts award, the Buffalo Distinguished Citizen Award, and national Outstanding Philanthropist Award.

Reproduction of the images contained within this exhibit is forbidden due to copyright restrictions.
