Online Resources
The following is a list of significant online resources available for music-related research. The list includes locally created and maintained databases of special interest, publicly- accessible websites, and major sources made available through vendor subscription services. Access to the last category is restricted to authorized University at Buffalo faculty, students and staff.
- Fake Book Index
Local index to contents of more than 100 fake books held by the Music Library. A fake book is a collection of musical lead sheets intended to help a performer quickly learn new songs. Each song in a fake book contains the melody line, basic chords, and lyrics - the minimal information needed by a musician to make an impromptu arrangement of a song, or "fake it."
- Buffalo Musicians
Buffalo Musicians is a local index of faculty, visiting faculty, members of the Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, music librarians, and others who have worked in various capacities for the Music Department at the University at Buffalo.
- Streaming Audio
Extensive online collections of audio files that augment the Music Library’s in-house holdings of recordings. Presently there is no representation in BISON of the individual works contained within these collections, so it is necessary to search them separately. The Music Library subscribes to these services. Therefore, they are accessible only to authorized University at Buffalo faculty, students and staff.
- Databases & Indexes
Online resources, including major reference works (Grove Music Online), indexes to writings about music, indexes to printed and manuscript music, and general resources. The list includes publicly-accessible resources and sources restricted to authorized University at Buffalo faculty, students and staff.
- Relevant Links
A selective list of music-related web resources.
Other commonly used online resources include:
- Websites: these are cataloged in BISON Catalog when selected by a bibliographer.
- Electronic journals and journals with full text available online: electronic journals are cataloged in BISON, but to check both categories go to Electronic Journals on the home page of the University Libraries.
