Key to Abbreviations and Notations

Abbreviations and notations used throughout the Catalog follow practice established in Peter Spielberg's James Joyce’s Manuscripts and Letters at the University of Buffalo: A Catalogue (University at Buffalo: Buffalo,1962).

Notations:

Manuscripts not marked with asterisks are part of the Wickser Collection.
Those marked with * are part of the Sylvia Beach Collection.
Those marked with ** are part of the B. W. Huebsch acquisition.

406.19-25 means page 406, lines 19 through 25.

A color in parenthesis, e.g., (orange), indicates that the preceding entry in a Joyce manuscript was crossed through with a crayon of that color.

A word crossed through, e.g., word, indicates that the word was crossed through with pencil if written in pencil, or with ink if written in ink in a Joyce manuscript.

FW denotes the Viking Press (New York, 1939) or Faber & Faber (London, 1939) edition of Finnegans Wake.

JJSB denotes James Joyce's Letters to Sylvia Beach by Melissa Banta and Oscar A. Silverman (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1987).

La Hune is used as a short title for Bernard Gheerbrant, James Joyce; sa vie, son oeuvre, son rayonnement (Paris: La Hune, 1949).

MS. denotes manuscript; MSS., manuscripts

PP denotes Pomes Penyeach (Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1927).

RH denotes the Modern Library (Random House) edition of Ulysses.

Slocum & Cahoon is used as a short title for John J. Slocum and Herbert Cahoon, A Bibliography of James Joyce, (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1953).

Spielberg is used as a short title for the aforementioned James Joyce’s Manuscripts and Letters at the University of Buffalo: A Catalogue (Buffalo: University at Buffalo,1962).

Sylvia Beach Catalogue is used as a short title for Sylvia Beach, Catalogue of a Collection Containing Manuscripts & Rare Editions of James Joyce, a Few Manuscripts of Walt Whitman, and Two Drawings by William Blake Belonging to Miss Sylvia Beach and for Sale at Her Shop (Paris: Shakespeare and Company, n.d. [1935]).

Robert Scholes is used as a short title for Robert E. Scholes, The Cornell Joyce Collection: A Catalogue (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1961).
