*III.B: Exiles:
Page Proofs for the Egoist Edition (1922)
:

Material Description and Collation: The manuscript consists of 40 sheets (160 pages) of unbound page proofs for the Egoist Press edition of Exiles; that is, the second English edition (see Slocum and Cahoon A14). Each sheet has been folded in half once vertically to form leaves; each side of the leaf has two printed pages and thus four pages to a sheet. The proof pages resemble the printed work but are printed on lighter and thinner paper. There are corrections in Joyce's hand in black ink on pp. [v], 8, 13, 20, 36, 48, 65, 81 and 114 and in pencil on pp. 20, 89 and 105.

Title: The title "Exiles" is printed on p. [i] and "EXILES | A PLAY IN THREE ACTS | BY | JAMES JOYCE" is printed on p. [iii].

Measurements: Each sheets measures 19.3 x 25.4 cm.

Pagination: The proofs are paginated as in the printed edition of Exiles: pp. [i]–[vi] and [1] are unpaginated and the remainder is paginated "2"–"68" and "70"–"154", except that p. [69] was not paginated and p. [91] was misprinted as p. "9" and corrected to "91" in lead pencil.

Contents: The manuscript contains a full set of page proofs of the second English edition (London: Egoist Press, 1921, [1922]), with some corrections in Joyce's hand that were incorporated in the published work. Since these presumably final proofs were printed and corrected by the author in 1922, the book must have been published in 1922, rather than 1921 as stated on the colophon.

Dating: These page proofs are dated 10–17 January 1922 (see Other Markings).

Other Markings: Joyce wrote the following in the upper left corner in black ink: "Pr. | 10-1-22" on pp. [i] and 11; "Pr. | 12-1-22" on p. 27; "Pr. | 13-1-22" on p. 43; "Pr. | 10-1-22" on p. 59; "Pr. | 16-1-22" on pp. 75 and [91]; "Pr. | 17-1-22" on p. 107; and "Pr. | 14-1-22" on pp. 123 and 139 inscribed in black ink in Joyce's hand in the upper left hand corner. There is stray mark in black ink on p. [iii].

Publication: The manuscript has not been reproduced.

Notes: There are 2 notes with the manuscript in Sylvia Beach's hand on sheets of green paper: on p. [1] she wrote "1st Egoist Press ed. of Exiles | with 1 MS correction by author" in lead pencil, beneath which she added, "& MSS dates by author" in blue ink and on p. [2] she wrote "ms. correction of Joyce" in lead pencil.
