IX.A.5.

IX.A.5: Miscellaneous Manuscripts: Loose Sheets:
Reading Script for Joyce's Recording of "Anna Livia Plurabelle" (
Finnegans Wake I.8) for the Orthological Institute in Cambridge (1929):

Material Description and Collation: The manuscript consists of 10 sheets of photographic paper; the versos are blank.

Measurements: The sheets measure approximately 53.2 x 37.6 cm.

Pagination: Pages [1]–[9] are numbered "52"–"60" but p. [10] is not numbered.

Contents: The manuscript is photographic enlargement of pp. 52–60 of the first edition of Anna Livia Plurabelle (New York: Crosby Gaige, 1928; see Finnegans Wake I.8, pp. 213.03–216) made by C. K. Ogden, from which Joyce made his recording (see Slocum and Cahoon, p. 173).

Dating: The recording took place in August 1928.

Other Markings: There are various markings in lead pencil on pp. [2] and [3].

Publication: This manuscript has not been reproduced.

Notes: The manuscript was housed in a large folder of light blue and blue-green paper covers over boards, with tan paper endpapers; it has a black cloth spine, black cloth corners, and three cloth ties sewn through the top, bottom and right margins; a white paper label is affixed to the front cover, which has "SHAKESPEARE AND COMPANY | 12, Rue de l'Odéon – Paris – VIe" printed in black ink inside a black border; on the label, in black and red ink, Sylvia Beach wrote: "ANNA LIVIA PLURABELLE | (Last 10 pages) | photograph reproduction enlarged | printed in large type for C. K. Ogden | from Fountain Press edition | in Cambridge, England, used by James Joyce | who described it as "specially printed for his reading". | for the recording of his reading of a | part of this work for the ORTHOLOGICAL | given to Sylvia Beach by James Joyce himself on his return | from England | Society, Cambridge".
