*V.A.9:
Holograph Draft of an Addition to the First Placards for the "Cyclops" (12) Episode (1921)
Material Description and Collation: The manuscript is composed of 2 loose sheets of large unlined paper (similar in kind to MSS V.A.20 and V.A.22), which were either torn from a notebook or were part of larger sheets. Joyce wrote on the recto pages only (the versos are blank) in black ink, with a pencil line indicating the placement of an insertion on p. [1r]. The sheets were cleaned, de-acidified and individually encapsulated in February 1988.
Measurements: Both sheets measure 30.4 x approximately 19.5–20.0 cm.
Contents: The manuscript contains a late addition that Joyce submitted to the printers for insertion on the first setting of text in proofs, the first placards ( Pl 34.i), for "Cyclops" that were set on 1 October 1921 and then the second setting, which incorporated this additional text, was pulled on 4 October.
The manuscript is a later version of the draft Joyce wrote on Buffalo MS V.A.2.b, p. [12v]. The text on each page of this manuscript is as follows:
MS V.A.9 Page: |
Ulysses Text 1922 (1992) / 1986: |

294.07–296.02 / 12.0534–0607 |

Pagination: Joyce foliated both leaves toward the bottom of the left margin of the recto pages "1)" and "2)" in pencil.
Other Markings: Joyce tagged this manuscript "A" in the top left corner of p. [1] in red crayon. During conservation, therefore after the manuscript's publication in the JJA , the recto of each leaf was marked "V. A. 9. p 1" and "V. A. 9. p 2" in lower right corner in pencil.
Dating: Joyce wrote this manuscript in late September 1921 in Paris.
Publication: The manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 13.172–173. It has been transcribed and annotated in Phillip F. Herring (ed.), Joyce's Notes and Early Drafts for "Ulysses": Selections from the Buffalo Collection , (Charlottesville: University Press of Virginia, 1977), pp. 130–131.
