*V.B.11.a.i

*V.B.11.a.i [V.B.11.a.]: Complete Printers' Typescript of the "Nausicaa" (13) Episode for The Little Review and Ulysses (1920) :

Material Description and Collation : The manuscript consists of 21 loose sheets of paper, which Spielberg described as "thin" typing paper, with corrections and additions in Joyce's hand in black ink on all of the pages. Pages [1], [2], [7] and [14] are blue ribbon top (original) copies and pp. [3]–[6], [8]–[13] and [15]–[21] are black ink bottom (carbon) copies; all are typewritten and single-spaced and the versos are blank, except for p. [13v], on which there is a printer's signature. Only the top copy sheets were cleaned, de-acidified, backed with protective paper and encapsulated in May 1988; none of the bottom copy sheets have been conserved.

Measurements : The sheets measure approximately 27.8 x 21.5 cm., except for p. [19], which measures approximately 27.8 x 23.0 and pp. [20] and [21], which measure approximately 27.8 x 22.5 cm.

Pagination : The sheets were paginated "1"–"21" in the lower left margin in lead pencil and also stamped pp. "82"–"102" in the upper right margin in black ink (therefore this pagination is a continuation of the stamped page numbers on Buffalo MS V.B.10.a.i) .

Contents : The manuscript is a complete typescript of the " Nausicaa " episode, comprised of mixed top and bottom copies of what were at least 3 complete typescripts (a top copy and 2 bottom copies), of which both a complete and a partial copy survive (Buffalo MS V.B.11.a.ii and Cornell, item 57). The typescript was not prepared entirely from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript version of the episode, though its precise relationship to the Rosenbach manuscript is unclear (see CSE 1743). The Little Review and the first placards of Ulysses were each set from different copies of the typescript; The Little Review copy is not known to be extant and this copy was the 1921 printers' copy. The "Nausicaa" episode appeared in the April, May-June and July-August 1920 issues of The Little Review (VI.11, VII.1 and VII.2), pp. 43–50 (13.0001–0280), pp. 61–72 (13.0281–0673) and pp. 42–58 (13.0674–1306), respectively. The text on the pages is as follows:

Dating : The typescript was prepared in February-March 1920 in Trieste and revised by Joyce for The Little Review in black ink and then further revised in Paris also in black ink by late September 1921 for the printing of Ulysses .

Other Markings : Page [1] of the typescript is headed with the Roman numeral "XIII" in pencil and crossed out in red crayon. The notation "debut chapitre" was written in the upper center margin on p. [1] in pencil and " fin chapitre" was written in pencil at the end of the typescript on p. [21], probably by the printer. There are Darantiere printers' marking, including printers' signatures, on pp. [1], [3], [5], [7], [11]–[13v], [16], [18], [20] and [21]. There are marking in blue crayon on p. [6], smudges in black ink in the margins on pp. [5], [6], and [21], water stains on p. [21] and a rust stain from a paperclip in the upper left margin on p. [1]. The upper portion of p. [11] was torn and two pieces of scrap paper with text printed in French were pasted on the verso to repair the sheet and the upper portion of p. [12] was also torn and two pieces of scrap paper (postage stamps) were pasted on the verso to repair that sheet. A small tear in the upper right corner of p. [19] has not been repaired and a portion of text there is missing. The pages were folded in the center horizontally and vertically.

Publication : This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 13.272–293.

Notes : There is a pre-Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript draft level of the episode: Buffalo MS V.A.10 and 2 further copybooks Cornell, item 56. The Cornell Joyce collection contains a complete copy of the typescript of the "Nausicaa" episode (item 57). The first placards of the episode were set in late October 1921.
