*V.B.13.h.4

*V.B.13.h.4: Fourth Part of the Printers' Copy of the Typescript (with First and Second Overlay) of the "Circe" episode for Ulysses :

Material Description and Collation : The manuscript consists of 5 sheets of long, thin typing paper. All of the pages are double-spaced typewritten black ink bottom (carbon) copies; all the versos are blank. There are corrections and additions in Joyce's hand on all of the pages.

Measurements : The sheets measure approximately 33.0 x 22.0 cm.

Pagination : The sheets were paginated "81)"– "84)" and "86)" in the lower left margin in lead pencil, possibly by Joyce, and they are also stamped "83"–"86" and "88" in the upper right corner in black ink .

Contents : The manuscript is a typescript of the "Circe" episode, comprised of only bottom copies of what were presumably 3 complete typescripts (a top copy, none of which survive, and 2 bottom copies), of which 1 partial, other copy survives (Buffalo MS V.B.13.e). This part of the typescript was prepared from the scribal version of the Rosenbach manuscript (faircopy) version of the episode (MS V.B.13.d.1). The typescript was revised by Joyce, who also made most of these same emendations on the corresponding pages of the other copy of the typescript and then he further revised only this copy. This copy of the typescript is continued on MS V.B.13.h.3 and is continued on MS V.B.13.h.5. The text on the pages is as follows:

MS V.B.13.h.4:

Ulysses 1922 (1992) / 1984:

p. [1]: "81)" & "83"

490.16–491.21 / 15.2611–2645

p. [2]: "82)" & "84"

491.22–493.01 / 15.2646–2686

p. [3]: "83)" & "85"

493.01–494.12 / 15.2686–2728

p. [4]: "84)" & "86"

494.12–495.17 / 15.2728–2766

p. [5]: ["85)" & "87"]

Missing; see MS V.B.13.e, p. [5]

p. [6]: "86)" & "87"

496.28–498.04 / 15.2804–2841

Other Markings : The printers wrote " Pl. 56 " on p. [6] in the upper left corner in blue crayon. There are printers' signatures on pp. [3] and [6], printers' markings on all of the pages in lead pencil and black ink smudges on all of the pages.

Publication : This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 15.236–245.

Notes : The outer edges of most pages are worn and discolored and p. [3v] was repaired with tape. There are 2 perforations in the left margin of each sheet, where the sheets were once fastened together, and were folded several times.
