*V.B.13.h.7: Seventh Part of the Printers' Copy of the Typescript (with First and Second Overlay) of the "Circe" episode for Ulysses :

Material Description and Collation : The manuscript consists of 16 sheets of typing paper. Note that pp. [1]–[3] were typed as part of MS V.B.13.c; they are single-spaced typewritten top (original) copies in blue ink, based on the scribal transcript of the photostats of the Rosenbach manuscript (V.B.13.b), and are a distinct level from the remainder of the typescript. The other pages are all single-spaced typewritten black ink bottom (carbon) copies. All of the verso pages are blank. There are corrections and additions in Joyce's hand in black ink on all of the pages, except on pp. [2], [12] and [16].

Measurements : Pages [1]–[3] measure approximately 27.0 x 20.7 cm. and all the other sheets measure approximately 27.0 x 21.0 cm.

Pagination : The sheets were paginated "130"–"145" in the lower left margin in lead pencil and also stamped "132"–"147" in the upper right corner in black ink. Pages [1]–[3] are also numbered "75", "76" and "76" in black ink in the left margins; this other pagination corresponds to the page numbers of the Rosenbach manuscript from which the photostat and the holograph copies (MSS V.B.13.a. and 13.b) were made.

Contents : The manuscript is a mixed typescript of the end of the "Circe" episode. Pages [4]–[16] are bottom copies of what were presumably 4 complete typescripts (a top copy, none of which survive, and 3 bottom copies), of which 2 partial, other copies survive (Buffalo MSS V.B.13.e and 13.g). Pages [4]–[16] were prepared from the scribal version of the Rosenbach manuscript (faircopy) version of the episode (MS V.B.13.d). The typescript was revised by Joyce, who also made most of the emendations on the corresponding pages of the other copies of the typescript. Pages [4]–[16] of the typescript are continued from MS V.B.13.e.6 and the typescript is concluded here. The text on the pages is as follows:

  Other Markings : "(End of Ulyses [ sic ]. | Part II.) | -:-:-:-:-" is typed at the end of the episode on p. [16] and crossed through in lead pencil. There are printers' signatures on pp. [2], [5], [7], [9] and [15] in blue crayon and in lead pencil on p. [13], printers' markings on all of the pages in lead pencil and blue crayon, except on pp. [3], [4], and [14], and black ink smudges on pp. [2], [3] and [8].

Publication : This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 15.283–298.

Notes : There are 2 perforations in the left margin of pp. [1]–[ 3] and 3 perforations in the left margin of pp. [4]–[16], where the sheets were once fastened together. Pages [1]–[3] were folded horizontally in the center and pp. [4]–[16] were folded horizontally and vertically in the center.
