Partial Printers' Typescript of the "Proteus" (3) Episode for The Little Review and Ulysses (1918) :

Material Description and Collation : The manuscript consists of 1 loose sheet of paper, which Spielberg described as "thin" typing paper. It is a single-spaced typewritten purple ink bottom (carbon) copy; the verso is blank. The sheet was cleaned, de-acidified, backed with protective paper and encapsulated in May 1988.

Measurements : The sheet measures approximately 28.0 x 22.5 cm.

Pagination : The typist paginated the sheet "-10-" in the center of the upper margin in 1918. The sheet was also paginated "38" in the lower right margin in black ink, possibly by Joyce or Beach in 1921 for the printing of Ulysses .

The pagination of the typescripts for the printers of Ulysses was continued directly from the "Nestor" typescript (MS V.B.2; pp. "18"–"27", only p. "26" of which is known to be extant) and is continued on the "Calypso" typescript (MS V.B.3.a.i, of which only pp. "41" and "42" are known to be extant).

Contents : The manuscript is the only extant page of 1 of the 3 copies (a top copy and 2 carbon copies) of the typescript; based on a collation of the printers' pagination, this typescript consisted of 12 pages. The typescript was prepared from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript of the episode for its first publication in The Little Review but the same typescript was also used for the publication of Ulysses in 1922. This is the only surviving page of any copy of the typescript and was part of the 1921 printers' copy. It contains emendations in Joyce's hand for Ulysses in black ink. The text on the page is Ulysses 48.01–49.11 / 3.406–455 . The "Proteus" episode appeared in the May 1918 issue of The Little Review (V.1), pp. 31–45.

Dating : The typescript was prepared in January 1918 by Claud Sykes in Zurich and further revised by Joyce in Paris by 11 June 1921 in black ink for the printing of Ulysses (s ee Joyce to Claud Sykes; [probably late January 1918]; LII 416) .

Other Markings: There is a stain in the lower margin, possibly from water damage.

Publication : This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 12.259.

Notes : There are two pre-Rosenbach manuscript versions of the "Proteus" episode: NLI MS 36,639/07/A and Buffalo MS V.A.3. No other typescript copies of the " Proteus " episode is known to be extant. The first placards of "Proteus" were set in mid June 1921.
