*V.B.6

*V.B.6: Complete Printers' Typescript of the "Lestrygonians" (8) Episode for The Little Review and Ulysses (1917) :

Material Description and Collation : The manuscript consists of 19 loose sheets of paper, which Spielberg described as "thin" typing paper, with corrections and additions in Joyce's hand in black ink on all of the pages. Pages [4], [5], [14], [15], [16], [18] and [19] are blue ribbon top (original) copies and the remaining pages are black ink bottom (carbon) copies; all are typewritten and single-spaced and the versos are blank. The sheets were all cleaned, de-acidified and encapsulated and the top copy typescript sheets as well as p. [12] were also backed with protective paper in May 1988.

Measurements : The sheets measure approximately 28.0 x 21.5 cm.

Pagination : The sheets were paginated "95"–"112" in the lower right margin in black ink, possibly by Joyce, for the printing of Ulysses . Pages [12] and [13] were both paginated "106" and then p. [13] was renumbered "106bis" in red ink, probably by the printer.

Contents : The manuscript is a complete typescript of the "Lestrygonians" episode, comprised of mixed top and bottom copies of what were presumably 3 complete typescripts (a top copy and 2 bottom copies), of which no other copies are known to be extant, although a top copy must have been prepared as well as probably at least another bottom copy. The typescript was not prepared from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript version of the episode but presumably from a lost working draft. The "Lestrygonians" episode appeared in the January and February-March 1919 issues of The Little Review (V.9 and V.10-11), pp. 27–50 (8.0001–1027) and pp. 58–62 (8.1028–1193), respectively. Joyce further revised the typescript in black ink for the printing of Ulysses and someone, presumably Maurice Hirschwald at Darantiere, made non-authorial alterations to the typescript . The text on the pages is as follows:

Dating : The typescript was prepared in mid August 1918 in Zurich and further revised by Joyce in Paris by August 1921 in black ink for the printing of Ulysses .

Other Markings : The notation "nouveau chapitre" was written in pencil in the center upper margin on p. [1], surrounded by pencil lines on all sides to form a box, probably by the printer. There are Darantiere printers' marking, including printers' signatures, on all of the pages, except on p. [19]. There is a line in red crayon at the end of the episode on p. [19] and marks in purple crayon on p. [2]. The sheets were folded in the center horizontally and vertically. There are water stains on pp. [4] and [14]. During conservation, therefore after the manuscript's publication in the JJA , the sheets were marked "V B 6, 1"–"V B 6, 19" in the lower right corner in pencil.

Publication : This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 12.304–322.

Notes : No pre-Rosenbach manuscript version of the "Lestrygonians" episode is known to be extant. There is blue ribbon typescript on pp. [11] and [17], which could have been late or missed additions that were added to the bottom copies. Though it is not known to be extant, there were some revisions on a copy of the typescript for The Little Review , only a few of which Joyce also made on this copy. The first placards of the episode were set in August 1921.
