*V.B.7

*V.B.7: Complete Printers' Typescript of the "Scylla and Charybdis" (9) Episode for The Little Review and Ulysses (1918) :

Material Description and Collation : The manuscript consists of 22 loose sheets of paper, which Spielberg described as "thin" typing paper, with corrections and additions in Joyce's hand in black ink on all of the pages. Pages [1]–[4], [7], [8], [10], [12], [17], [19] and [21] are blue ribbon top (original) copies and the remaining pages are black ink bottom (carbon) copies; all are typewritten and single-spaced and the versos are blank. The sheets were all cleaned, de-acidified and encapsulated and the top copy typescript sheets were also backed with protective paper in May 1988.

Measurements : The sheets measure approximately 28.0 x 21.5 cm.

Pagination : The sheets were paginated "1"–"10" in purple pencil and "11"–"22" in lead pencil in the lower left margins , possibly by the printer . The pages were also paginated "113"–"134" in the lower right margin in black ink in 1921 for the printing of Ulysses , possibly by Joyce; on p. [1], the page number "115" was crossed out and "113" was written in pencil, by the printer, and p. "133" was corrected to read p. "134" on p. [22], possibly by Joyce .

Contents : The manuscript is a complete typescript of the "Scylla and Charybdis" episode, comprised of mixed top and bottom copies of what were presumably 3 complete typescripts (a top copy and 2 bottom copies), of which no other copies are known to be extant, although a top copy must have been prepared as well as probably at least another bottom copy. The typescript was not prepared from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript version of the episode but presumably from a lost working draft. The "Scylla and Charybdis" episode appeared in the January and February-March 1919 issues of The Little Review (V.12 [incorrectly numbered V.11] and VI.1), pp. 30–43 (9.0001–0486) and pp 17–35 (9.0487–1225), respectively. Joyce further revised the typescript in black ink for the printing of Ulysses and someone, presumably Hirschwald at Darantiere, made non-authorial alterations to the typescript as well . The text on the pages is as follows:

Dating : The typescript was prepared in mid August 1918 in Zurich and further revised by Joyce in black ink by August 1921 for the printing of Ulysses .

Other Markings : The notation "nouveau chapitre" was written in pencil in the center margin on p. [1] and circled in pencil, probably by a printer. There are Darantiere printers' marking, including printers' signatures on all of the pages in lead and purple pencils. There is a horizontal line in red crayon at the end of the episode on p. [22]. There are black crayon markings on pp. [2] and [10] and printers' smudges on pp. [15] and [20]. The sheets were folded in the center horizontally and vertically. During conservation, therefore after the manuscript's publication in the JJA , a tear in the right margin of p. [22] was repaired and the sheets were marked "V B 7, 1"–"V B 7, 22" in the lower right corner in pencil.

Publication : This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 12.350–371.

Notes : A rectangular block of paper has been cut out of p. [9]; it contained the musical notation that appears between 9.0499 and 9.0500. The National Library of Ireland has the only known pre-Rosenbach (faircopy) version of the episode (MSS 36,639/08/A–C). What was presumably an even earlier version of the episode was part of the 1949 La Hune Exhibition of Joyceana in Paris (item 254) but was lost in transit to Buffalo (see Spielberg , p. vii, n.1). The first placards of the episode were set in August 1921.
