Ulysses First through Fourth Settings of Page Proofs: Revised Third through Seventh Settings of the Text ("Lotus Eaters" to "Eumaeus"):

Material : The manuscripts are sheets of pulp paper printed on both sides, except for MSS V.C.2.B.1.i, pp. [93–96], 12.i.b, p. [260] and 19, p. [432] that are blank. There are numerous corrections and revisions in Joyce's hand on some manuscripts (see Contents ), all in black ink, except V.C.2.B.15.ii.a and 16.ii (Gatherings 22.2 and 23.2), where the corrections and revisions are in pencil. An additional piece of pulp paper, printed on one side, has been pasted onto MS V.C.2.B.1.i.a, p. [81] (see Contents , for further information).

Collation : The page proofs are in 8's, each consisting of 8 unsewn leaves, with 2 leaves per sheet or 16 pages: the first and eighth, second and seventh, third and sixth, fourth and fifth leaves are conjugate, except for MSS V.C.2.B.12.i.a, 12.i.b and 25.ii: 12.i.a that only consists of 4 leaves, pp. 257–260 and 269–272 (that is, the 1st and 8th, 2nd and 7th, 3rd and 6th, 4th and 5th leaves); 12.i.b only consists of 1 leaf, with 1 page of text, p. 259; and 25.ii also only consists of 1 leaf with 4 pages of text, pp. 56–64, though all these leaves are now separated.¹

The manuscripts consist of 134 copies of 1 to 5 settings of 27 gatherings, each with 8 leaves, with 2 pages per leaf, all with 37 lines of text (except for the first and last pages of each episode; the first pages only have 27 lines of text):

Each gatherings is designated by its signature number in the lower right corner of the first page of each gathering; that is, on pp. 81, 97, 113, 129, 145, 161, 177, 193, [209], 225, 241, 257, 273, 289, 337, 353, 369, 401, 417, 449, 465, 481, 497, 545, 561, 577 and 593. The printer repaginated some pages for the subsequent setting.

Contents : These manuscripts were printed by the Imprimerie Darantiere, Dijon, France, for the first edition of Ulysses . They are the second through fourth setting of the text in proof. The first setting of the page proofs were set from the revised first placards (that is, the galley proofs, see the unmarked set, Buffalo MSS V.C.1.B, Contents ).

The revised copies of the first setting of the page proofs were used to set up the subsequent setting of the page proofs; for further details see V.C.2.B: Chart 2.

On MS V.C.2.A.1.i.a, p. 81 a 12-line block of text (081.01–14/5.471–483), measuring 13.0 x 5.7 cm., was attached at the top of the page. It is a resetting of placard XI with the corrections and additions indicated on that placard . There is also some (now illegible) pencil writing beneath this additional proof. On 15 September 1921, Darantiere sent Joyce this additional printing to coordinate the text between placard XI and gathering 6.

Joyce's signature appears in ink on MSS V.C.2.B.13.ii, p. 273 (PP 18.2; along with Beach's signature), 14.iii, p. 289 (PP 19.3; with Beach's signature), 21.ii, p. 465 (PP 30.2), in pencil, and 25.1 (PP 36.1). Joyce used pencil and ink lines at times to indicate the placement of the additions; they often do not appear in the JJA reproductions.

MS V.C.2.B.1.i.a, p. 81 is dated "19.xi.xxi" by the printer (and crossed out) in pencil; on 1.i.b, p. 81 "Beach" was written in pencil in the upper right hand margin and on 1.iii.a, p. 81 "1H 1/25" was written in pencil in the center of the right margin.

On MS V.C.2.B.7.iii.a, p. 189 Joyce tagged two insertions with an "A" in green crayon.

On MS V.C.2.B.13.i, p. 273 is dated "14.X.21 H", by the printer, in black ink.

In the upper left corner of MS V.C.2.B.14.i, p. 289, "p. 289" was written in pencil, probably by Beach.

MS V.C.2.B.14.iii, p. 289 is dated "25.X.XX" in pencil, presumably by the printer, in the lower right margin.

On MS V.C.2.B.21.ii, p. 465 the printers wrote "R.29.xii.xxi" in the center right margin.

On MS V.C.2.B.25.i, p. 561 "Beach" is written in pencil in the upper right corner of the page, probably by Beach, and Joyce's instructions at the top of the page have been underlined in green crayon and then crossed out in red crayon, presumably by the printer.

The marked copies of the first setting of the page proofs were returned to Darantiere by 2 August 1921, at which time the second page proofs of the text were set-up. Joyce returned the second setting of the page proofs before 2 September 1921, on which date Darantiere sent Joyce placards I–XI (see the unmarked set MSS.V.C.1.C). The third setting of the page proofs were printed in September 1921.

Some leaves are detached. The folds are worn and at times tattered or torn. The outer edges of the sheets do not seem to have been machine cut. The upper margins of V.C.2.B.9.ii.c, pp. 221–224 and V.C.2.B.9.iv.b, pp. 223–224 are torn and missing.

These were all originally 8 leaves; the other manuscripts have been either lost or destroyed by 1962.
MS V.C.2.B.19.i, p. [432] is blank.
Spielberg's numeration has been standardized as follows: for example, what Spielberg designated as V.C.1.1a has been rendered here as V.C.1.i.a and what was designated as MSS V.C.1.2a have been rendered as V.C.1.ii.a, etc.
