VI.E.5.

*VI.E.5: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Manuscripts: Scribal Copy of Marked Pages of transition 8 for the Galley Proofs of the Crosby GaigeEdition of Anna Livia Plurabelle/Finnegans WakeI.8 (1927–1928):

Material Description: The manuscript is a set of disbound pages of transition 8, with emendations and revisions in Beach's hand on 19 pages (pp. "17"–"35") in black ink, with lead pencil lines indicating the placement of the emendations.

Collation: The manuscript consists of 10 loose leaves (20 pages of printed text). All the leaves are separated, except pp. "23"–"26" that comprise one single contiguous sheet.

Measurements: Each leaf measures 18.5 x 14.0 cm. and the sheet measures 18.5 x 28.0 cm.

Pagination: The printed text is paginated "17"–"36" as in transition 8,but pp. "17", "19", "21", "23", "25", "27", "29", "31", "33", and "35" were repaginated as pp. “12", "14", "16", "18," "20", "22", "24", "26", "28", and "30" in an unidentified hand in the upper right margin of each page in orange crayon.

Contents: The manuscript is a copy of a revised version of the printed text of a "Continuation of a Work in Progress" in transition 8 (November 1927), with some text crossed through and additions in the margins, all in black ink. The manuscript also contains the first page of Robert Sage's "The Common Denominator" (transition 8, 36). This manuscript was intended for the printers of the Crosby Gaige edition of Anna Livia Plurabelle (New York; October 1928; Slocum and Cahoon A32). See transition 8, 17–35 as well FW 196–216.
There are two other extant marked copies of transition 8 pages for the galley proofs of Anna Livia Plurabelle: Yale MS 7.7, which was revised by Joyce, and BL MS 47474, fs. 248r–257r, which has the same overlay, but in the hand of another, unidentified amanuensis. If the lead pencil markings are printers' instructions, then it is possible that this was the printers' copy for Anna Livia Plurabelle, though more than one of these copies could have been sent to the printer.

JJA Draft Code: I.8§1.11"+.

Dating: The manuscript was prepared in late 1927–January 1928.

Other Markings: The printed title "CONTINUATION OF A WORK | IN PROGRESS" was crossed though and replaced with "ANNA LIVIA PLURABELLE" above it, possibly in Beach's hand, all in green crayon. Also on p. "17" the page number, the footnote, and "Transition nº 8" were crossed through in green crayon; "omit" (in between horizontal lines) was written beside the footnote as was "3" in a circle, all in lead pencil. "TRANSITION" in the top margins of p. "18" and "JAMES JOYCE" in the top margins of p. "19" were both crossed through in green crayon. On p. "33", "Transition nº 8" was crossed through in green crayon. On p. "35", the footnote number, "(to be continued.)", and the text of the footnote were all crossed through in green crayon. The first page of Robert Sage's "The Common Denominator" was all crossed out in green crayon. Beach indicated the text breaks on the different galley pages, 3–13, here on pp. "19", "20", "22", "23", "23", "25", "26", "27", "29", "31", "32", and "33".

Publication: This manuscript has not been reproduced, but Yale MS 7.7 and BL MS 47474, fs. 248r–257r have been reproduced on JJA 48.218–227 and 48.228–237.
