VI.G.3.a.

*VI.G.3.a [VI.F.1]: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Galley Proofs: First Setting of the Long Galley Proof Sheets for the Crosby Gaigeedition of Anna Livia Plurabelle/Finnegans Wake I.8 (1928):

Material Description and Collation: The manuscript consists of 17 sheets of paper, printed only on one side. The text on all the pages was printed vertically, except for the front matter on p. "D-14" that was printed horizontally. Pages "D-17", "D-20", "D-24", "D-27", and "D-28" contain corrections and revisions in the hand of an unidentified amanuensis in lead pencil; the other pages are unmarked. There are an unequal number of lines per manuscript page, which are not yet separated into the pages as published.

Measurements: Each sheet of the manuscript measures 63.5 x 19.0 cm.

Pagination: Although the set is complete and the sheets are consecutive, the sheets are numbered in the center of the top left corner in lead pencil, probably by the printer as follows: "D-14", "D-11", "D-12, "D-13", "D15"–"D-20", "D-22"–"D-24", and "D-26"–"D-29"; there are no pages numbered "D-21" and "D-25".

Contents: The manuscript is a copy of the first set of galley proofs for Anna Livia Plurabelle (New York: Crosby Gaige, 1928; Slocum and Cahoon A32), including all of the front matter and the introduction by Padriac Colum, emended for the printer, Princeton University Press. Also see FW 196.01–216.05.

Text of Anna Livia Plurabelle

JJA Draft Code: I.8§1.12.

Dating: The manuscript was printed from 10 to 13 February 1928. The date is printed at the top of each sheet as follows: "Feb. 10" on pp. "D-15"–"D-20"; "Feb. 11" on pp. "D-22"–"D-24", "D-26", and "D-28" (p. "D-27" is not dated); and "Feb. 13" on p. "D-29"

Other Markings: Each recto page was also stamped "PROOF | From PRINCETON UNIVERSITY PRESS | PRINCETON, N. J." by the printers in the top right corner of all the pages in purple ink. The proof was labeled "C" by the printer in green crayon on the verso of p. "D-15" and above it in very light pencil Beach wrote "proofs of Anna Livia Plurabelle". Pages "D-16"–"D-20", "D-22"–"D-24", and "D-26"–"D-29" were also date stamped "Feb 15 1928" in the lower right corner in black ink by the printer.

Publication: Except for pp. "D-11"–"D-13", the remaining sheets of this manuscript have been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 48.240–253.

Notes: The manuscript was folded three times horizontally, presumably to fit in an envelope. This manuscript was not returned to the printer.
