VI.H.7.

*VI.H.7: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Page Proofs: Unmarked Copy of the Second Setting of Proofs of "The Muddest Thick that was Ever Heard Dump" for Tales Told of Shem and Shaun/Finnegans Wake II.2§8 (1929):

Material Description and Collation: The manuscript consists of 25 sheets of thin wove paper, printed on only on one side in black ink (that is, the title and initial are not printed in red ink as they are in the published work); the pages are unevenly machine trimmed on all sides. There are no corrections or revisions. The top margin of p. "49" is tattered and there is a 3 cm. vertical tear at its center.

Measurements: The sheets measure 26.9 x 21.0 cm.

Pagination: The sheets are not paginated, but are numbered "25"–"49" in the lower margin in blue crayon in an unidentified hand.

Contents: The manuscript is an unmarked copy of the second setting of proofs of the "The Muddest Thick that was Ever Heard Dump" for Tales Told of Shem and Shaun (Paris: Black Sun Press, June 1929; Slocum and Cahoon A36). See Tales Told of Shem and Shaun, pp. 17–43 as well as FW 282.05–304.04.

JJA Draft Code: II.2§8.9'.

Dating: The manuscript is undated but was probably set in May 1929; Joyce revised the other copies of this setting in May 1929 as well.

Publication: This manuscript has not been reproduced, but the marked set at the Beinecke Library, Yale University (MS 9.5), has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 53.145–168.
