Limnetic Stickleback

Data Sheet 10

Viability of hybrid sticklebacks

(McPhail 1993a)

F1 hybrid sticklebacks were bred in the lab from crosses between benthic and limnetic fish taken from Paxton Lake. These hybrid sticklebacks were introduced to Second Lake, a small lake on Texada Island, British Columbia, which lacked a native stickleback population.

Since the introduction of the hybrids to Second Lake in 1981, these fish have formed a small, healthy population. The fish are intermediate in anatomical features between Paxton Lake's benthic and limnetic sticklebacks, although the population is shifting slightly towards the benthic phenotype.
