Eugene R. Mindell

Dr. Eugene R. Mindell was born on February 24, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois. 

He attended the University of Chicago and served in the Navy while in medical school.  He was a physician for the Veterans Administration in Columbia, South Carolina, from 1945-1946. In the late 1940s, Dr. Mindell returned to Chicago and began his lifelong and innovative work on bone cancer.  He was among the first to use chemotherapy and bone resection and reconstruction in the treatment of osteosarcoma. 

He moved to Buffalo in 1953 as a physician in private practice and lecturer to UB's medical students.  In 1964, the University asked Dr. Mindell to estabish the Department of Orthopaedics and serve as UB's first orthopedist in the medical school.  He served as department chairman until 1988.

Dr. Mindell died on February 15, 2019 at his home in Amherst, New York.
