Susan Cole

"I like to describe her work as being at the intersection of gender studies and religious studies"

-- Judith Ginsburg

An internationally recognized classics scholar, Susan Guettal Cole came to UB in 1992 as part of a concerted effort to bring "new blood" into the classics department. Six years later, Cole became chair of the traditionally male dominated department in 1998.

The author of two books, Theoi Megaloi: The Cult of the Great Gods at Samothrace (1984) and Landscapes, Gender, and Ritual Space: The Ancient Greek Experience (2004), and innumerable journal articles and book chapters, Cole's research focuses on women and religion in ancient Greece.

Very involved in the American Philological Association (APA), Cole has served on its Board of Directors and Program and Nominating Committees. She chaired its Committee on Professional Ethics and this year she is on the ballot for APA President.

Cole has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung.
