VI.C.8: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Scribal Notebook (1935)
The manuscript has marbled black-and-white covers over boards, with a red cloth spine, which is worn but intact, and the edges of all the leaves are speckled blue-and-white. The front and back flyleaves are plain white, unlined paper. The notes are in the hand of Mme Raphael in black ink. Joyce used blue and red colored crayons to cross through the notes he had used in his manuscripts.
The manuscript consists of 138 leaves (276 pages) of blue horizontally ruled paper, 12 stitched gatherings (the 1st and 12th gatherings are composed of 18 pages and the 2nd through 11th gatherings are composed of 24 pages); none of the pages are detached. All of the pages are inscribed, except both sides of the front flyleaf that are blank.
The manuscript measures 18.8 x 14.5 cm.
The notebook contains transcriptions of Joyce’s notes in the following primary notebooks:
|Scribal Notebook||Primary Notebooks||JJA|
|MS VI.C.8, pp. –||MS VI.B.32, p. –back flyleaf recto||42.075–086|
|MS VI.C.8, pp. –||MS VI.B.18, p. –back flyleaf recto||42.086–128|
|MS VI.C.8, p. –back flyleaf verso||[MS VI.D.5; missing notebook(s); first part]||42.129–144|
The pages are not numbered.
Mme Raphael prepared the transcriptions in this notebook in early 1935 in Paris (TD 33) and Joyce used the notebook from 1935 to 1937.
The notebook was marked "8" in blue crayon on the back cover recto, probably by Joyce. There is a stamped purple stationer’s mark on the front cover verso that reads: "195".
The manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile in JJA 42.074–144. MS VI.B.32 was published in The Finnegans Wake Notebooks at Buffalo: VI.B.32, edited by Vincent Deane, Daniel Ferrer and Geert Lernout (Turnhout, Belgium: Brepols, 2001).
There is a printed stationer’s label on the front cover verso that reads: "Papeterie Imprimerie | – RELIURE – | A. Roques | & Fils | 1 & 3, Rue de Condé | 4, Rue de l’Odéon | PARIS (VIe) | DANTON 02-50".
