*VII.B: Scribal Copy of "The Day of the Rabblement" Essay (Probably 1920–1921)


Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 3 leaves of off-white paper, watermarked "EYE-EASE | HAMMERMILL | FILLER", with blue printed horizontal lines and 7 circular holes in the left margin, in Cyprian Beach’s hand in black ink; the versos are blank except for p. [3v], which has a note in Sylvia Beach’s hand.

The pages are not numbered.


Measurements

The manuscript measures approximately 28.0 x 21.5 cm.

The manuscript is a scribal copy of Joyce’s essay "The Day of the Rabblement."


Other Markings

On p. [3] Cyprian Beach wrote "James A. Joyce" on p. [3r] and in the upper left margin of p. [3v] Sylvia Beach wrote: "the Day of the Rabblement | (copy in long hand | by J v M)".


Dating

Joyce had this copy made in 1920–1921.

This manuscript has not been reproduced and was not listed in Spielberg.This text was published in Two Essays (Dublin, [1901], pp. [7] and 8; Slocum and Cahoon B1).
