VIII.C.1: Other Notebooks: Paris Notebooks: Paris Address Book (1936–1940)


Material Description and Collation

The manuscript is a pocket-sized alphabetical address book, with lettered tabs, that now consists of 1 to 5 pages per letter (except for [I] and [W], which are missing), with stiff brown cardboard covers and a brown leather spine, part of which is missing. It now consists of 59 leaves (118 pages) of blue-lined graph paper; a leaf of the notebook has been torn out (between pp. [106] and [107]), a portion of which is still attached at the spine; the sheets are stapled twice in the center and folded in half vertically to form the notebook. The versos of the front and back covers and 56 pages are written on in Joyce’s and other hands in lead pencil, blue, red, yellow, orange and black crayons as well as black, blue and green inks; 61 pages are blank: pp. [4], [12]–[16], [21]–[24], [27]–[32], [36], [37], [38], [43], [48], [53]–[59], [64]–[69], [73], [74], [76], [79]–[86], [89]–[94], [98]–[102], [104], [105], [106], [109] and [112].


Measurements

The manuscript measures 14.7 x 19.5 cm.


Contents

The notebook contains names, addresses and numbers in lead pencil, blue, red, yellow, orange and black crayons as well as black, blue and green inks.


Dating

Joyce probably used this address book from 1936–1940, mostly in Paris.
