VIII.C.2: Other Notebooks: Paris Notebooks: Address Book and Post-Finnegans Wake Notebook (1940–1941)
Material Description and Collation
The manuscript is a pocket-sized diary, with stiff brown leather covers over thin boards. It now consists of 74 leaves (148 pages) of white paper. On the front cover recto printed in gold, there are a decorative image of a woman’s head near the top left corner and the year "1940" near the lower right corner; on the back cover verso printed in gold the words "SEITA" surrounded by a circle near the top left corner and "CAISSE AUTONOME | D’AMORTISSEMENT" near the lower edge; all edges are gilt trimmed. The text block is also sewn with white thread. The endpapers are printed in red-brown ink; pp. [4] and [5] have maps printed in blue and red ink; the remaining pages are printed in blue ink; p. [7] has spaces printed for the owner’s name, address, phone number, etc. (they are not filled in); pp. [8]–[17] have printed horizontal lines and spaces for addresses and telephone numbers; pp. [18] and [19] have printed calendar listings; p. [20] has a printed list of the seasons and holidays; pp. [21]–[25], [140], [141] and [142] have a printed label "NOTES" and otherwise were printed blank. Pages [26]–[139] have printed calendar dates; the versos are divided into three days and the rectos are divided into four days. Pages [144], [145] and [146] have a printed list of postal tariffs; the front endpaper has a cigarette advertisement and the back endpaper has a cigar advertisement. 72 pages are written on in Joyce’s and other hands in lead pencil, as is the back bound endpaper; 76 pages are blank: pp. [1]–[5], [7] [18], [19], [20], [59]–[97], [99], [103]–[126] and [143]–[146].

The manuscript measures 11.0 x 6.6 cm.
Contents
The notebook contains names, addresses and numbers as well as notes in blue and green ink and lead pencil.
Dating
This is the final notebook Joyce used from 1940 to 13 January 1941 in France and Switzerland.

Joyce’s stamped address label "James Joyce | 34 Rue des Vignes | Paris XVI" is pasted on p. [1].

This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 3.426–472.
Notes
The gatherings are split and detached from the spine; only the endpapers and covers hold the gatherings to the notebook. The covers are lightly stained and worn. A small strip of leather is affixed to the rear cover, which is rolled to form a pencil holder; inside is a wooden, lead pencil, stamped "BAIGNOL & FARJON," with a brass end on the pencil.
