As the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of James Joyce materials, the UB James Joyce Collection aims to invite a broad global audience to discover and experience the literary achievements of the acclaimed Irish writer.
For Bloomsday 2021, the Poetry Collection publicly launched a comprehensive campaign to secure the future preservation and growth of the Joyce Collection for generations to come and to expand its public access. With support from the Consulate General of Ireland, New York, we unveiled a 36-foot James Joyce mural in the city of Buffalo.
At the center of this campaign is a Joyce Museum in historic Abbott Hall on UB’s South Campus. We have also been seeking endowment funding for a James Joyce Curator position, acquisitions and preservation, and maintenance. In 2022 we received a $100,000 Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for the design phase of the museum followed in December 2024 by a $500,000 gift to create an endowment for Programming and Exhibitions.
On Bloomsday 2023, the University at Buffalo announced $10 million in funding from New York State for the construction of the UB James Joyce Museum. The funding was secured through the advocacy of then New York State Senator, now US Congressman Tim Kennedy and with the support of New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
There are a number of ways to support the James Joyce Museum and James Joyce Collection with a tax-deductible gift:
Supports the establishment of the James Joyce Museum in Abbott Hall on UB’s South Campus. The museum will offer for the first time a dedicated public space for visitors to experience the UB James Joyce Collection.
Supports the general operations, exhibitions, and programming for the James Joyce Museum.
Established by Ansie Silverman Baird, MA ’80, this fund supports the general needs of the James Joyce Museum.
Supports the UB James Joyce Collection and the acquisition of new Joyce-related materials.
Established by Dr. Michael Groden, this fund supports the UB James Joyce Collection, including the purchase and preservation of materials related to other Irish and Irish-American poets and artists who credit Joyce as a major source of inspiration.
