Congratulations to UB student Rebekah Young, winner of the University Libraries 2023 Journey of Discovery research contest. A Cognitive Science major with a minor in Computer Science, Young’s winning essay, titled “An Interconnected Approach to Human Existence,” discusses the work of Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska and delves into the significance of her poems in modern society.
The annual Journey of Discovery contest, sponsored by the University Libraries, offers UB undergraduate students the opportunity to submit an essay or video that describes the way in which a library resource, service, space or person(s) challenged them in a way that changed the course of their original research project. A prize of $500 is awarded to the winning entry.
Rebekah Young was introduced to the Journey of Discovery contest at a library-sponsored Stress Relief event in the Blake Center earlier this semester. “I immediately took interest in the contest with a desire to share my unique story of mentorship and identity exploration with the support of UB’s library resources,” she says.
Outside the classroom, Young enjoys incorporating movement such as dancing, strength training, or a simple walk outside into her daily routine. “I advise anyone who has felt impacted by UB’s library services, from the adaptability of the physical spaces to the access to an abundance of resources, to share their experiences by submitting to the Journey of Discovery contest.”
