Not everyone realizes that it takes a lot to keep everything humming along efficiently in an academic library. Though unseen to most visitors, it’s the behind-the-scenes work that ensures books are ordered, cataloged and delivered so that patrons have fast, easy access to the materials they need.
One person at the heart of this effort is Joe Patton. Recently promoted to fulfillment librarian at the University at Buffalo Libraries, Patton takes pride in keeping operations running smoothly.
“I’m most proud of the continued success we’ve had in keeping the ship afloat,” he said. “Even when big changes are coming, we’re doing the work correctly and efficiently.”
Raised in the quiet town of LeRoy, between Buffalo and Rochester, Patton studied history and film at SUNY Brockport. It was there he developed a passion for research and libraries—a passion that eventually led him to UB, where he earned his master’s in library science in 2015.
Patton began working in the University Libraries in 2013 as a student assistant in Special Collections. Since then, he has held several roles, including work in digitization, exhibits, instructional services and open education initiatives.
While in Special Collections, Patton curated two exhibits. The first, Prominent Visitors, featured archival materials related to notable individuals who visited UB as lecturers or performers. The second, 1967, explored the significance of that year in UB’s history, highlighting events such as the Keyishian v. Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York decision and the development of the North Campus.
He joined the Delivery Services team in 2022 and was promoted to his current role in 2024. As fulfillment librarian, Patton oversees shelving, retrievals, interlibrary loans and mailroom duties. He also contributes to preparations for the upcoming Lockwood Library renovation, one of the Libraries’ most significant ongoing projects.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing how we adapt during and after the renovation,” he said. “There are so many moving parts, but it’s exciting to plan for what comes next.”
Patton especially enjoys working with students—both those who use the library and the student assistants who help keep it running. “They’re vital to what we do. Getting to know them makes my day.”
He also values the unique opportunity to collaborate with his wife, Sarah Patton, lead user services librarian at UB Libraries. “We talk often about problem-solving and future planning,” he said. “It’s a partnership that extends beyond home and into our shared professional lives.”
Whether managing collections or supporting long-term planning, Patton remains committed to ensuring that UB Libraries continues to deliver seamless access and support for the campus community.
