If you’ve ever had a tricky technology issue in the UB Libraries, chances are you’ve crossed paths with the person who thrives on solving them. For nearly 10 years, Information Technology Specialist Nick Dolce has been one of the go-to problem solvers in UB Libraries, balancing everything from software troubleshooting to cloud system management—and enjoying every challenge along the way.

At UB Libraries, his work spans systems, networks and security, often requiring custom fixes such as operating system images, scripts and network policies. Right now, he’s working on the rollout of Windows 11 across the Libraries, which is nearly complete. “It was a big project involving creating custom images, testing network policies, and deploying time-sensitive updates,” he explained.
Dolce is also contributing to the Lockwood Library renovation and helping revamp the Libraries’ Staff Web on SharePoint.

Before joining UB, he held a variety of IT positions at Buffalo State, National Fuel Gas, a nonprofit, an insurance agency and a local school district.  Along the way, he built a strong foundation in troubleshooting, system management and user support—skills that continue to inform his work at UB.

His certifications in computer troubleshooting, networking and IT security, which he keeps current through recertification, remain points of pride. “I gained a lot of valuable knowledge and experience from the training for those certifications and am proud of them,” he said. “For me it represented a new challenge and opportunity to help people and learn more within the field.”

Born in Buffalo and raised in the Southtowns, Dolce studied media studies at UB, concentrating in film, video production, and animation while minoring in photography. Later, earned a degree in Computer Information Systems from Buffalo State, diving into application programming and systems administration. That mix of creative and technical skills has shaped the way he approaches IT work today—both practical and imaginative.

Outside of work, family comes first. He enjoys camping, concerts and time outdoors with his wife, daughter and two dogs. Hobbies like photography, guitar, gaming and thrifting keep him busy, while his passion for physical media drives a growing collection of music, movies and games.

Asked what he enjoys the most about working at UB, his answer is simple: helping people. “For me, everything in life is a learning lesson,” he said. “I love making people feel more comfortable with technology. And I usually learn a thing or two about their work as well.”

“Through my time here at UB, I’ve met so many great colleagues, clients and vendors who have all contributed to my experiences and skills. I love passing that down to others and making people feel more comfortable with technology.”

And here’s a fun fact: ask him about heavy metal or classic rock and you’ll quickly find he’s a walking encyclopedia.
