Thanks to the generous support of riverrun, the Poetry Collection of the University Libraries invites applications for the 2019 riverrun Summer Research Program. The program provides a $1,900 stipend to one Western New York college student to pursue research at the Poetry Collection, home to one of the world’s largest collections of 20th– and 21st-century poetry in English. The Poetry Collection holds poetry books, chapbooks, little magazines, broadsides and anthologies, as well as over 150 archival collections of poets, presses and poetry organizations, including James Joyce, William Carlos Williams, Dylan Thomas, Robert Duncan, Helen Adam, and the Jargon Society.

Eligibility

Undergraduate and graduate students from colleges and universities within eight Western New York counties are eligible to apply. The counties include: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming.

Program Requirements

The recipient will spend approximately two weeks between June 3 and August 23, 2019 conducting research at the Poetry Collection. A public presentation of this research, such as a talk or a blog, is expected by the end of the program.

Applications

Applications are due by May 3, 2019 and should be submitted as .doc, .docx, or PDF files to: Dr. Alison Fraser, Assistant Curator.

Applications should include:

  • A one-page, single-spaced cover letter explaining how this opportunity will assist the applicant in their educational and professional goals and how it fits into their broader scholarly interests.
  • The names and contact information for two academic references.
  • A one- to two-page, single-spaced research proposal describing the project. The proposal should include a detailed summary of the Poetry Collection materials that would be utilized. Applicants may wish to consult the Poetry Collection’s Finding Aids Database and learn more about the collection and its holdings.

Applications will be assessed based on the scholarly potential of the proposed research project, including how it advances scholarship, and how it utilizes the unique holdings of the Poetry Collection.

Applicants will be notified by May 17, 2019.
