Archiving Your Scholarship
The UB Libraries can provide assistance with sustainable, long-term, online preservation of your work (articles, data, and other scholarly output).
Archiving your scholarly output can increase the visibility and help assure the permanence of your work. The quickest and easiest way for UB scholars to archive their work is to deposit it in the UBIR:
UB Institutional Repository (UBIR)
The UBIR, hosted by the UB Libraries, collects, preserves, and distributes UB's research and scholarship, including full-text articles, full-text reports, audio mp3 files, images, and video clips. UB faculty, staff and students may deposit their work for free here!
What other options are there for archiving?
OpenDOAR
OpenDOAR serves as the main directory for subject repositories, or disciplinary repositories. A sampling of prominent subject repositories includes:
- arXiv.org e-Print Archive [Sciences]
- CiteSeer [Computer Science]
- PhilSci Archive [Philosophy of Science]
- PubMed Central [Medicine]
- Social Science Research Network – SSRN [All Social Sciences]
How do I know if I am allowed to archive my work?
The majority of journal publishers permit authors to archive either a preprint or a postprint of their article.
Open Policy Finder
Provides summaries of publishers’ article sharing policies. Look up the title of your journal to see which version of your article you are allowed to archive, where, and under what conditions.
- Submitted (preprint)
- Accepted (postprint)
- Published (version of record found on publisher website and in UB Libraries’ subscription databases)
