After closing the doors of its longtime home in Baird Hall last May, the Music Library has a new, distinct presence on the fifth floor of Lockwood Memorial Library. This bright, updated space, with its modern amenities and extended hours, will attract a wider audience of users and allow for extended hours to access the collection.
Features of this redesigned area include modern furniture, listening stations for in-house use of sound media, individual workspaces and a new highlight coming later in the fall semester: Piano Pods. These locked and reservable, soundproof individual rooms, each with a full-size, weighted Roland digital piano are a great new addition to the Music Library space, allowing users to browse and play scores on site. Soon, patrons from any department at UB will be able to reserve the Piano Pods through the Libraries’ booking system and check out a kit at the main circulation desk that contains a key, headphones, and an audio jack for using personal corded headphones. The pianos also have a USB port to connect a personal laptop and add a flash drive for storage.
“For the first time, LPs and CDs are now accessible so that patrons can browse these collections and use one of the library CD players or record players to enjoy this collection on-site or sign them out to listen elsewhere,” says Deborah Chiarella, associate librarian and liaison to UB departments of Music, and Theatre and Dance. This exciting development in the Music Library’s relocation to a more central location in Lockwood Memorial Library will increase the visibility of this remarkable collection to users outside the Music, and Theatre and Dance departments who traditionally have been its primary users.”
With over 224,000 cataloged holdings, the 10,000-square-foot space allows for storing the extensive inventory of music scores, recordings, LPs, and books, giving patrons room to browse the thousands of offerings in the Music Library in a comfortable and modern setting.
The contents of the former Treasure Room, which houses rare editions of books and music scores, are now located in Room 517 Lockwood Memorial Library. Items in the Treasure Room are available to view by appointment only. Please contact Deborah Chiarella to schedule an appointment.
