Advanced Information Literacy

This course is designed to build upon a learner’s search skills and expertise in the information literacy concepts that underpin scholarship at college or university. This badge incentivizes them to continue improving their information literacy competencies over their academic and workplace careers. By participating in this course, one can use these advanced search skills to save time conducting literature reviews, efficiently gather and organize information, ethically use sources, and protect their own intellectual property. Learners will work independently on a topic of their choosing and receive feedback from their peers throughout the process. The modules build on each other and provide learners with a framework (project outline).

• Employ advanced search strategies in relevant scholarly information sources
• Construct effective search strategies, based on need, and circumstance using advanced search techniques
• Produce a compelling and manageable research statement
• Effectively brainstorm your research topics
• Plan how to license your work
• Employ citation management tools and style manuals
• Construct citations for written and multimedia sources
• Distinguish between copyright free and copyright protected multi-media works
• Judge currency, relevancy, authority, accuracy & bias of information in order to select credible information
• Differentiate between informal and formal information sources in an open scholarship
• Articulate the economic and political aspects of disseminating information

• Successfully complete Module quizzes
• Submit a Research Project Outline into the Coursera platform that includes:
  • a research question or argument
  • three points or facts that defend or support the main idea
  • expansion on the key points or facts using the following:
    • Statement: Write your topic or statement out again.
    • Point or fact: Re-state each point or fact from page one
    • Quote or data: Use a direct quote or data from the source including an in-text citation.
    • Citation: Give a full citation for each scholarly source in MLA 8th or APA 7th
