Raymond Federman

Raymond Federman was born in Paris, France in 1928.  He emigrated to the United States as a refugee of the Holocaust in 1947.  Federman served as a paratrooper in the United States Army from 1951-1954 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1953.  He attended Columbia University on the G.I. Bill where he graduated cum laude in 1957.  Federman continued his studies at the University of California Los Angeles where he earned an M.A. (1958) and Ph.D. (1963).

Raymond Federman joined the faculty of the University at Buffalo as an associate professor in the French Department in 1964.  He was promoted to full professor in 1969 and transferred to the English Department and the Comparative Literature Program in 1973. Federman was named SUNY distinguished professor in 1990 and co-founded UB's Poetics Program the next year.  From 1994-1999, he held the Melodia E. Jones chair in French at UB.  Federman retired from UB in 1999.
