Frank Hastings Hamilton

Born: 1813
Death: 1886

Frank Hastings Hamilton was born in Wilmington, Vermont in 1813.  He was apprenticed to a practicing physician and attended lectures at Fairfield Medical School before receiving his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1835.  Hamilton was a professor of surgery at Fairfield Medical School and Geneva Medical College before moving to Buffalo in 1844.  Along with Austin Flint and James Platt White, Hamilton is credited with being a driving force in the founding of the University of Buffalo School of Medicine.  He was the first dean of the School of Medicine and served as professor of surgery for 14 years before leaving UB.

When naming places on the North Campus, UB chose the founding faculty of the School of Medicine for the campus roads.  Hamilton Road, which runs from the north side of Capen Hall to the Ellicott Complex was named in honor of Frank Hastings Hamilton.
