George Hochfield

George Hochfield was born on September 15, 1926 in Trenton, NJ. He served in the United States Navy during Workd War II and attended the University of California, Los Angeles on the G.I. Bill.  In 1947, he transferred to University of California at Berkeley where he received his Ph.D. in 1958.  A renown scholar on historian and author Henry Adams, Hochfield was a professor of English at UB from 1963 to 1992.

In 1963 Hochfield was asked to sign an anti-Communist loyalty oath. His refusal led to a Supreme Court challenge to the New York State "Feinberg Oath." The court struck down the oath in 1967.

He died on January 17, 2018.
