James W. McLernon

James W. McLernon was born in Buffalo, New York in 1927 and graduated from Kenmore High School in 1945. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he attended night school at UB and earned a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. McLernon had an extremely successful career in the auto industry and became an executive for General Motors and Volkswagon.
McLernon credited the education he received at UB for much of his success and remained an active member of the UB community. He served on the advisory councils at the university and as a board member of the University at Buffalo Foundation. McLernon was a generous donor to the university, creating an endowed scholarship and donating one million dollars to a university capital campaign. McLernon was recognized by UB with an honorary doctorate in 1998 and in 2002 he received the Samuel P. Capen Award, the UB Alumni Association's highest honor.
