Gerald Rising

Gerald Rising was born in Rochester, New York in 1927.  He earned both an A.B. in English (1948) and an Ed.M. (1951) from the University of Rochester, an M.S. in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame (1961) and a Ph.D. in mathematics education (1965) from New York University.  Rising joined the faculty of the University at Buffalo's Department of Mathematics in 1966 as an associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 1969.  He was co-founder and director of UB's Gifted Math Program and from 1973-1976, he served as the chair of the Department of Instruction.  Rising was named SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor in 1986.  He retired from UB in 1994.
