She is also the chief scientist at Cymfony, Inc., a company she founded in 1996 that now specializes in public relations solutions based on information extraction. Srihari received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from UB in 1992. Her thesis, "Extracting visual information from text: using captions to label faces in newspaper photographs," was based on work that she did with the PICTION project at CEDAR.

Her current research, which is sponsored by grants from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Science Foundation, focuses on text mining and unintended information retrieval, a key issue in security on the internet.
