Madeleine Stern

Madeleine Stern, Associate Librarian Emerita, retired in 1986 as Assistant Director for Collection Development in Lockwood Memorial Library. A native of Budapest, Hungary, Stern began her association with the University in 1957 as an Instructor in French. Between 1963 and 1973 she held a variety of positions in the Cataloging and Acquisitions Departments of the University Libraries including Head of the Serials Division in the Cataloging Department and Assistant Head of the Acquisitions Department.
In 1972-1973 Stern served as Planner and Coordinator of the new Undergraduate Library. From 1974 until her retirement she directed collection development activities for Lockwood while also serving as Acting Head of Lockwood for the period 1975-78.
As the Acting Head of Lockwood she oversaw the relocation of the 1,000,000 volume Lockwood Memorial Library collection and library staff from the South Campus to the new Lockwood Library on the North Campus.
She was a member of the American Library Association (ALA), the State University of New York Library Association, and the Association of Libraries at UB. While at UB she served on many committees and task forces, both library and University-wide.
Upon the occasion of Stern's retirement her husband Robert Stern, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, established the Madeline Stern Fund for Lockwood Humanities Collection in her honor.
At that time the Associate Vice President for University Libraries praised Stern's "distinguished service [and] profound influence on the growth and quality of this institution and most especially on the development of the Lockwood Library collections [...] Her leadership, wise counsel, bibliographic expertise, and dignified presence have left a unique and enduring mark."
